On September 13, 2008, Hurricane Ike made landfall along the upper Texas coastline.  A Category 2 Hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 110 mph, Ike covered over 425 miles of Texas coastline. Harris County took a direct hit with the eye of the storm passing over Galveston Bay.

Since the hurricane, Harris County has admirably provided quick response in the recovery and rebuilding efforts—both in the immediate aftermath of the storm and towards long-term recovery. As part of the recovery effort, the county embarked on a detailed damage assessment, cataloging and defining both the estimates of total damages from the storm, and cost estimates for unmet needs of the county.

Hurricane Ike ranks as the third costliest storm in U.S. history. Total damage, which encompasses both housing and infrastructure, in Harris County alone is estimated to be in the billions. Harris County has received an initial allocation of approximately $140 million for disaster programs, but this allocation is just a first step. Harris County has sought additional funding from the state to help rebuild homes and infrastructure severely damaged by the storm.

This Website will be updated frequently with information regarding available disaster recovery programs.
